The Inter-Semester HW Assignment

Hi Folks
  As promised, here is a substantial homework and reading assignment for next
semester.  As I announced, next semester I will give weekly hw assignments,
whose grade will count towards your course grade.
  I will collect the inter-semester assignment on the first day of class, and
grade those problems marked "Graded", below.
  For the problems marked "Extra", I will also collect them, and give you
comments, but will not count them towards your grade.
