S04..(3)..MAP2302 3145...ELEM.DIFF.EQUATIONS...MWF4...LIT.221....King Differential eqns ("diffyqs") is a beautiful subject. Our text is "Fundamentals of Differential Eqns..." (4th edition) by Nagle, Saff, Snider. We will cover much, but not all of, chapters 1-7. We will also cover material that is not in the text. I may put some additional books on reserve in Marston Science Library for reading assigments. HW: Due Wedn, 08Jan: P5: 5-8,15,16 and P.14: 1,3,6,15. Prof. Jonathan King Office: LIT402 (NE Corner) Tel: 392-0281 x270 E-address: squash@math.ufl.edu COURSE WEBPAGE: Teaching page: ARCHIVE PAGE (private to our class) Prerequisite: The knowledge of Calculus 2 (MAC 2312, MAC 3512, or MAC 3473), as well as the foregoing knowledge of Calc 1 and High-School Mathematics. ================================================================ There will be one "Do I know the prerequisite mathematics?" exam on Friday, 09Jan2004. It is an in-class, closed-book, closed-calculator, open-brain exam. It will count approximately 5% of the course grade. It covers material from high-school: e.g how to intersect two lines, how to graph a parabola etc., the quadratic formula etc., factoring a quadratic polynomial, and from Calculus 1 and from Calculus 2 e.g Chain rule, product rule, L'Hopital's rule, logarithms, exponentials, trig fncs, limits, sequences and series and their convergence tests, absolute and conditional convergence, Taylor series, radius-of-convergence, implicit differentiation, inverse-fncs, conic sections, etc. Although this Prerequisite Exam does count for a grade, its PRIMARY PURPOSE is is for you to do self-evaluation. Am I prepared for this course? Have I reviewed my HS and Calc1 and Calc2 material so that I can use those techniques easily and rapidly? ================================================================ In addition to the prerequisite exam, there will be two in-class exams, and a final (typed) project due on Friday 23Apr2004. There will not be a final exam. For the time being, office hours will be: M,F: 8th period. W: 9th period. ================================================================
