Welcome to F2012: MAC2313 5581 Analyt.Geom.&.Calc.3 MTWF5 MAT115 This is a 1-semester course that covers some absolutely lovely mathematics. The overall direction is that of calculus in several dimensions, of visualization of multi-dimensional objects, and of some elementary vector physics. We will cover some applications to Newtonian mechanics, primarily orbits of satellites, escape velocity and the like. Prof. Jonathan King squash@ufl.edu (eddress) Office: 402 Little Hall (Top floor, NE corner) 392-0281 x270 "Maximize x, y and z." If I am not in the office then it is best to EMAIL me, as I don't remotely pick-up phone messages. If urgent, then telephone to the secretaries at 392-0281.x221 and they can contact me at home. Office hours: http://math.ufl.edu/~squash/info.jksched.html My OHs will V*a*R*y during the semester, so please check the webpage. Currently, OHs are: Wed. and Fri., 6th period [12:50-13:40]. Course page: http://math.ufl.edu/~squash/course.calc3.2012t.html RESOURCES: http://math.ufl.edu/~squash/teaching.html Archive: I'll email the eddress for posting, and the URL for browsing. >> Please keep our archive private to our class. Text: "Concepts in Calculus, III : Multivariable Calculus" by Sergei Shabanov, University Press of Florida. ISBN: 978-1-61610-162-6 EXAMS: In addition to pop quizzes, there will be several exams; see our course webpage. All of my classes have CP (class participation) grade, based on Posting to our Archive, Speaking in class, and in OHs/appt., helping other students during OHs., etc. There is NO final exam; rather, an optional /typed/ Final Project, due Friday, 07Dec2012, (LDClass+2) SYLLABUS: The entire text, chapters 11-15, vectors up through line-integrals, culminating in Stokes' theorem, and related results. Also, a little bit about orbital mechanics [seeing as we have NASA]. >> PREREQ-Exam: There will be a Mini-exam (a test of prerequisite >> knowledge, and the MATH-GREEK alphabet) on MONDAY, 27Aug.. On our >> webpage, there is a sample test. /--------------------------------------------------------\ CLASS-PHOTO DAY: Friday, 31Aug2012. Look sharp! If you want to be in the photo, then please bring name-card with (optional but useful) your telephone number. \________________________________________________________/ /--------------------------------------------------------\ Letters-of-recommendation (LORs): I base LOR substantially on how a student "thinks on his feet". I generally ask that students have had /two/ courses with me before asking for a LOR. See http://math.ufl.edu/~squash/teaching.html#namelor for important details. \________________________________________________________/
